Abstract

Delirium is an acute, reversible organic mental syndrome characterized by disturbance of attention and cognitive function, increased or decreased psychomotor activity and a violation of the cycle of sleep and wakefulness. Delirium is a serious, complex problem that is associated with adverse outcomes, including an increase of mortality in medical hospitals. Given the scale of the problem, the solution should be a priority for clinicians and researchers. Delirium increases mortality in patients of ICU, duration of hospitalization, the cost of treatment and the risk of developing cognitive impairment.
