Abstract

This study aims to investigate whether the predictable collective family leisure time reinforces the relationships between the predictability of time constraint and family leisure expenditure. The study used a panel Tobit model for analysis. The results illustrate that the volume of family leisure expenditure increases when family members highly expect time constraints. Second, the volume of family leisure expenditure decreases when house members show low use of their time as collective family leisure time. Finally, the predictability of time constraint and possibility of family leisure time usage affects family leisure expenditure, regardless of the absolute levels of the amount of leisure time. These results imply that to promote family leisure, it is desirable to consider personal time usage and to check the economically active members of the family. Therefore, they suggest that family characteristics influence the decision-making of time allocation in the family.
