Abstract

This paper reconstructs the biography of poet, publisher and political activist Sergei A. Sokolov, also known as Sergei Krechetov (1878–1936). Special attention is paid to Sokolov's relations with Ivan Bunin. The publication includes material from numerous letters written by Sokolov to Bunin. A substantial part of this contribution focuses on Sokolov's activities in the Russian White Movement and its military arm, the White Guardsmen of the Volunteer Army. Sokolov worked in the propaganda unit of the Army, which was known as OSVAG (Osvedomitelnoe Agentstvo). The publication touches upon a number of further aspects of the cultural life of the Russian environment in Berlin during the twenties and discusses the mysterious “Fraternity of Russian Truth”.
