Abstract

The article proposes a theoretical study of a relevant problem - the category of ethnicity and its representation in nicknames. The paper analyzes Russian and foreign researchers’ views on the problem of ethnic identity and ethnos, provides ethno-cultural and structural-semantic characteristics of nicknames, and justifies the possibility of their usage when studying the ethnic segment of the global network. The authors introduce the definition of a nickname, identify by statistical analysis the most productive groups of nicknames and establish the place of an ethnic component in their structure.
