Abstract

Relying on previously unknown archival sources the article examines Tobolsk Provincial Magistrate activity. The paper analyzes civil and criminal proceedings in Tobolsk province that were implemented by the appellate instance - the Provincial Magistrate. The research findings lead the authors to the conclusion that the Provincial Magistrate more frequently confirmed the decisions of lower courts, rarely exacerbated the punishment. Among the cases, which were investigated in Tobolsk province, the most frequent offences were crimes against the person and human life, crimes against property, crimes against social order and justice, official crimes.
