Abstract

On the basis of documents and special literature the article reveals the essence of the “soft soap” policy, which included the system of measures that were taken by the Russian authorities to win the support of Dagestan aristocracy in solving their foreign-policy problems. The author shows how and why the imperial authorities encouraged Dagestan feudal owners to take the oath of citizenship in the XVII-XIX centuries by concrete factual material. The paper describes such methods of influence as distribution of gifts and rewards, granting land allotments, appointing military ranks, etc.
