Abstract

The paper is devoted to the analysis of traditions and trends of Russian Islamic religious education, especially in the Southern Urals and the Volga region, after these territories became part of Russia (16th century) until the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the history of Russian Muslim education in the Soviet period (1917–1991). The features of such Islamic institutions as mekteb, madrasa, Orenburg Muslim Spiritual Assembly are shown. Special attention is paid to the tradition of rewriting Islamic texts, Arab-graphic printing, trends in the emergence of new forms of education and types of educational institutions, the involvement of Muslims in the process of secular education. The paper considers the events in the field of Russian Islamic education in the early years of the Soviet era, 1930s–1940s, shows the role of such personalities in the history of Muslim education of that time as R. Fakhretdinov, Z. Kamali, A. Rasulev. The specifics of obtaining spiritual education by Russian Muslims in the 1960s – early 1990s are studied in detail.
