Abstract

The article examines the features of literary reception of the classics in the Russian literature at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. As it is shown in the paper, the temporal distance between the classics and modernity in the Russian literature, which is essential in the main European traditions, was compressed and turned into a sharply drawn and acutely problematized line. The act of self-consciousness of new culture was relevant not only to the “long-past” time of great aesthetic achievements, but also to the heritage and reputation of “living” classics, with whom modernists were in the state of intense dialogue.
