Abstract

The study aims to identify communicative features of the American courtroom speech for the defence in the XIX century, its emotional and expressive means and persuasive techniques. Scientific novelty of the study lies in considering the American courtroom speech for the defence from the viewpoint of a comprehensive description of the lexical and semantic features characterising legal discourse. It is the first time that the speech made by the defence attorney H. Selden, who lost the case, becomes an object of study from the viewpoint of linguistic aspects. As a result, the researcher has identified the lexical means of influence in the English language, syntactic techniques and figurative-emotional expressive means that intensify effectiveness of the attorney’s argumentation in an attempt to achieve the sought-after goal.
