Abstract

This study consisted of 10 female students with Cobb’s angle of 10 degrees or more to investigate the effects of 12 weeks gyrotonic exercise program on body composition, Cobb’s angle and lumbar muscle strength in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. The gyrotonic exercise program was conducted twice a week for about 60 minutes, and was applied to four programs such as Arch-curl series, Hamstring series, Upper body series, and Abdominal series. Gradually changing with increasing. The results of this research is as follows: 1) After 12 weeks of gyrotonic exercise program, body composition were a significantly increase in body weight (p<.05) and lean body mass (p<.05). 2) After 12 weeks of gyrotonic exercise program was a significantly decrease in Cobb’s angle (p<.01). 3) After 12 weeks of gyrotonic exercise program was a significantly increase in lumbar muscle strength (p<.05). These results confirm that the gyrotonic exercise program has a positive effect on the improvement of idiopathic scoliosis and there is considered to be an effective method for the prevention and exercise treatment of idiopathic scoliosis.
