Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the functional features of lyric texts – a component of the cultural area, which has a great power of influence on its recipients; the song is capable of powerful both generative and destructive effects on the language and its carriers. The article deals with the temporal network of English lyric texts by American singer Billie Eilish. The object of this study is directly the English lyric texts of the artist. The subject is their temporal network. The goal is to characterize the totality of the means of expressing the temporality of the English-language song texts. The concept of temporality, as a rule, is used as a synonym for the term time, temporality – the verb tense category is a system of grammatical forms that are used to express the relationship of an action to the moment of speech or to the time of another action (that moment, except for the moment of speech). Temporality is a semantic category that reflects a person’s perception and understanding of the time of designated situations and their elements relative to the moment of the speaker’s speech. Billie Eilish’s English-language lyric texts arise as a purposeful speech action, as the main way of people communicative interaction, which reflects the specifics of thinking, character traits, educational features, mentality and culture of a person of this era. The temporal network of Billie Eilish’s texts is based mainly on temporary forms of the present indefinite, while continuous forms are of little use, and perfect or perfect-continuous are generally uncharacteristic. Further research on the predicative arrangement of Billie Eilish’s texts for modal and personal networks seems to be perspective.
