Abstract

With the development of modern civilization, the cultural heritage of ethnic minorities in China is gradually disappearing. In particular, traditional costumes of minorities are crucial elements of their material culture and can be used independently to understand their identities. In addition, the role of museum that preserve and study the traditional cultural heritage of minorities to the computer literate young generation, new technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality must be incorporated into museums. Therefore, in this study, the current status of museums on the online graveyard costume exhibition and software that can produce 3D costumes or accessories were investigated. Five types of costumes were selected based on the results of the graveyard costume analysis. The developed software analyzed the shape, color, material, and wearing method of the selected five costumes. The traditional costumes of the Miao Chinese minority, which are currently exhibited and stored in the museum, were produced in 3D virtual images to create museum content applying virtual reality technology. The results of this study provide a meaningful proposal to advance knowledge on ethnic minorities and virtual museums.
