Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the process of formation of volunteer cavalry divisions, which in the future would make up the 5th Guards Don Cossack Cavalry Corps, based on previously unpublished memoirs of Lieutenant General S.I. Gorshkov. Particular attention is paid to the critical analysis of memories in order to identify inconsistencies or confirm memories with real documents. The article discusses the issue related to the Cossacks who became the part of the Don volunteer cavalry divisions. S.I. Gorshkov places great emphasis on the heroic deeds of the Cossacks, noting individual episodes associated with specific personalities. In his memoirs, S.I. Gorshkov indicates the chronology of manning, the commanding staff and other aspects of the formation of individual cavalry divisions, in which he was personally participated. As a result of studying the problem, the author came to the conclusion that the memoirs of Lieutenant General S.I. Gorshkov, first introduced into scientific circulation, made a great contribution to the reconstruction of the combat path of the 5th Guards Don Cossack Cavalry Corps and its individual formations. Among the memoirs of S.I. Gorshkov until November 1942, no inconsistencies with historical reality and facts deliberately distorting it were revealed.
