Abstract

The purpose of the work is to introduce into scientifi c circulation and determine the heuristic potential of M. Hrushevsky’s correspondence with the Russian legal historian M. Diakonov. The methodological basis of the research involves the complex analysis of historiographical facts, the use of archival heuristics, the analytical and synthetic critique of sources, considering the principles of historicism and objectivity. The scientifi c novelty of the work. The article presents the correspondence between M. Hrushevsky and M. Diakonov for the fi rst time. Conclusions. The publication of M. Hrushevsky’s epistolary with famous Russian intellectuals, actualizes correspondence with addressees of the so-called «second plan», those who communicated only about professional topics, without discussing political and private issues. The article has clarifi ed heuristic potential of the correspondence of a Ukrainian scientist with a St. Petersburg lawyer. It testifi ed to M. Hrushevsky’s purposeful activity of translating his historical works into Russian in order to popularize the Ukrainian view of the past of Eastern Europe in the intellectual space of the Romanov empire. In addition, the discovered letters of M. Hrushevsky to M. Diakonov add a lot to the understanding of the Kazan period of exile of the Ukrainian historian. In particular, his testimony about his creative plans, psychological state, household chores, etc., is interesting. The preserved letters also shed light on the noble gesture of M. Diakonov, as one of the responsible editors of the ideologically liberal «Russian Historical Journal»: wanting to support his Ukrainian colleague in diffi cult times for him morally, he invited M. Hrushevsky to join the editorial board of the new periodical edition. We’ve also noted the incompleteness of the revealed epistolary dialogue, which encourages us for further research and indicates the need to continue the publication of M. Hrushevsky’s correspondence with his other correspondents of the so-called «second plan».
