Abstract

The article analyzes the genre-typological originality, structure and range of problems of D. S. Merezhkovsky’s literary-critical works written in 1893-1894. The author traces how the literary-critical method of Merezhkovsky evolves, the genre palette of his works expands. The paper establishes the links of literary criticism with critical prose. The essay “Noveishaya lirika” (The Newest Lyrics) reveals the influence of symbolism on the literary-critical thinking of D. S. Merezhkovsky. Basing on the study, the author determines the genre forms of D. S. Merezhkovsky’s essays: a literary-critical essay, an obituary essay.
