Abstract

The article studies the joint epigram by Baratynsky and Pushkin The Journalist Figlyarin and the Truth (1827). The epigram is analyzed in the light of the history of literary relations of its authors with the addressee of the text, Faddey Bulgarin, and is placed in the context of the tense polemics between Moskovsky Telegraf and Severnaya Pochta. A detailed reconstruction of the circumstances of the epigram’s creation and publication reveals its paradoxical role in the history of the journal debates of 1825–1827: despite its polemical and provocative character, this epigram contributed to the reconciliation of Nikolay Polevoy with Bulgarin and his editions.
