Abstract

Many discourses on future education focus on student agency as a quality or ability required of students who will have to live in the future. Therefore, in this study, comprehensively reviewing various theoretical discussions and opinions of experts, learner agency, which is discussed at an abstract level, was reconceptualized into three components (intention, self-regulation, and self-reflection) and two expression levels (individual and community level) appropriate to educational reality in Korea. Through the Delphi survey, the preliminary survey, and the main survey, a learner agency scale for middle school students, consisting of a total of 22 questions (11 individual level questions, 11 community level questions), was developed. Furthermore, this study suggested follow-up studies using this scale to analyze the long-term trend of the development of student agency, improve the form and implementation of the scale suitable for the school level, and explore various levels of environmental conditions that affect learner agency.
