Abstract

The article examines the main trends, causes and consequences of rural-urban contrasts in the level and quality of life of the population. The results of a ten-year comparative analysis of the socio-demographic characteristics of the population, indicators characterizing differences in disposable incomes and expenditures of residents depending on their place of residence, as well as the level of development of social and engineering infrastructure of settlements are presented. As a result of the performed research, it was found that according to most of the considered characteristics of the standard of living, the average villager lags significantly behind the average citizen, and the economic growth of the agro-industrial sector did not allow achieving the necessary reduction of the existing gap. The persistence of destructive differentiation of living standards exacerbates the problem of emptying vast rural areas, which for a number of reasons have found themselves in a deep and protracted socio-economic crisis.
