Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of reading comprehension intervention on reading fluency. Nine students exhibiting weakness in reading fluency and comprehension skills participated in the study. To each student, 24 reading comprehension intervention sessions focused on prediction and summarization strategies were delivered on a weekly or twice-weekly basis. Students’ fluency and comprehension skills were evaluated before and after the intervention. Their skills were assessed on both expository and narrative texts, and a paired-sample t-test was performed based on the pre- and post-test results. Our results revealed that the intervention improved students’ reading fluency significantly regardless of the text genre. Students’ comprehension skills also improved, but the improvement was statistically significant only for narrative texts. Implications for teachers and researchers are discussed.
