Abstract

The paper presents the results of ethnographic expeditions to the Germans living in Russia and Kazakhstan. The purpose of the project is a comparative description of the identity of the Germans, a previously united nation who, after the collapse of the USSR, were separated by state borders. The expeditions covered the regions of the Russian Federation (Saratov, Omsk, Novosibirsk regions, Altai Territory) and the Republic of Kazakhstan (Astana, Almaty). Using field methods, such as surveys and interviews, direct and participant observation, the authors explored the types of ethnic identity, ethnic symbols and landmarks, personal identity of the Germans, their opinions about the own past, present and future; German self-organization in the newly independent states; ways of preservation, museumification and presentation of the historical and cultural heritage of the Germans in Russia and Kazakhstan.
