Abstract

This study aims to analyze the syntactic structure, semantic function, and subjective quantity expression when ‘就是’ is used as a scope adverb. The scope adverb ‘就是’ acts to restrict the subsequent components. This study examined the scope restricted by the scope adverb ‘就是’ by dividing it into two aspects such as ‘quantity’ and ‘scope’. First of all, the use of ‘一+V+就是+NumP’ was particularly noticeable in the case where ‘就是’ restricts the quantity. The meaning oriented by ‘就是’ in the sentence is the subsequent quantity component, which becomes the focus information of the sentence. Even a small amount of an action becomes the amount of time, amount of motion, degree, and result indicated by ‘NumP’, and the quantifier ‘NumP’ alone is an objective quantity, but the scope adverb ‘就是’ can represent a large subjective quantity. That is, the quantity predicted by the speaker is less than ‘NumP’, and can be expressed as ‘expected value< actual value’. Next, when ‘就是’ restricts the scope, ‘就是’ is mainly used in front of a verb phrase or adjective phrase, indicating that the scope of the motion action is narrow or concentrated in one aspect. Also, ‘就是’ could indicate that the only exception exists within the scope of the same kind of thing. ‘就是’ is interpreted as ‘only’, ‘solely’, or ‘just’, etc., and expresses a small subjective quantity. In other words, it can be expressed as ‘expected value >actual value’ as the suggested scope is less than the standard amount or expected value in the recognition of the speaker. It is hoped that the analysis in this study will be helpful for understanding the quantity and scope restriction usage of the scope adverb ‘就是’ and be helpful for understanding each subjective quantity
