Abstract

Self-assessment of civiccompetences of the teaching community: the case ofDrohobych region. – Article.The article, based on a theoretical and empiricalanalysis of teachers and school principals’ sociologicalsurvey in Drohobych in 2020 which is called «Inquiriesof employers in the field of secondary education», in theorganization and realization of which the authors of thissurvey were directly involved, examines the opinion ofthe teaching community on the importance of the civiccompetences in the modern education system.The basic international and Ukrainian normativedocuments that determine the strategy of civic educationof schoolchildren and the importance of general andprofessional competences of a modern teacher areanalyzed.The focus is on the study of civic culture of theteacher as one of the levels of political culture. It isemphasized that the ongoing reforms in education entailnew requirements for the current teaching community,as well as for the future teachers. The authors raisethe question of the importance of civic competences formodern teaching, as the democratic principles of the NewUkrainian School create a completely new model of therelationship between a teacher and a student, and, mostimportantly, form a demand for a new type of the citizen.The importance of forming civic qualities, typicalof a democratic society for both students and teachers,is emphasized. Based on empirical data, the importanceof general and professional competences for modernteachers is shown. Also, based on the results of thesurvey, a conditional rating of descending importance ofa number of civic competences is constructed.It is shown that educators are not fully aware oftheir role in the socio-political life of the community ina democratic state. A great emphasis is placed on thenecessity to work on the formation of civic competencesof teachers throughout the scientific and pedagogicalcommunity, because the civic culture of the teacher, hisworldview are the main tools for having an influence onstudents.
