Abstract

The purpose of this study wasinvestigate individuals` motivation types for sports participation. Also this studyattemptedto focus onhow individuals continue their sports partciipationon the basis of self-determinationtheory. Seven males who have participated in life-long sports rpogram as a continuing education ata spor tuniversity in Seoul. Data from in-depth interviewswere analyzed by inductive analysis which is one of thequalitative research methods. According to the results, the self-determination theory shows the reasons of theextrinsic and intrinsic participants to continuously participate in a lifelong sport. The desire for selecting sportssubjects, facility, and relationship with others increased thes atisfaction regarding intrinsic motivation that a-ffects the positive outcome in terms of participating in lifelong sport.
