Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze learning experiences in the ‘mountain climbing activities’ as a college physical activity course and its educational effects in the respect of well-rounded education. The number of participants in this study was six students, one from each group out of 20 students who took part in the outdoor sport course ‘climbing Cheonwang Peak of Jiri mountain’ during 2 days in the fall semester, 2016. They were randomly selected to engage in interviews done before and after the climbing activity. Personal documents written by each participant were collected after the climbing activity. In addition, participant observation was conducted throughout the climbing activity. For data analysis, the constant comparative method for inductively analyzing data was done to categorize themes connected with the research questions, participants’ motivation, course satisfaction and educational effects. First, in terms of the participation motivation, the participants indicated positive aspects such as academic stress relief and new experiences in a natural environment, friendship and challenge as well as a negative aspect such as easily achieving a credit. Second, in terms of course satisfaction, negative factors such as poor environment for shelters and a low level of physical fitness were found. Third, educational effects in well-rounded education were drawn in relation to understanding the nature, considering others, realizing the importance of cooperation, filling a body and mind, promoting friendship, taking times for introspection, developing confidence for a future life and achieving a happy life through leisurely life style. Thus, it is necessary to satisfy students’ needs and interests through more developed college physical activity programs, achieving the purposes of well-rounded education.
