Abstract

The study discusses the legacy of the outstanding legal theorist N.I. Palienko in the field of the interre-lation between natural-law and positivist types of legal knowledge, analyzes their confrontation and further convergence throughout the history of ideas about law. Being in the same social and spiritual space, types of legal understanding have an objec-tive effect on each other. The ideological debate among the followers of the natural-law and positiv-ist approaches to law in conjunction with other fac-tors that caused changes in social development had a significant impact on the methodological devel-opment of legal knowledge, the clarification of con-cepts and categories of legal science, the new goals and objectives of researchers. The views of N.I. Pal-ienko are highly respected as they reflect methodo-logical pluralism and are based on the identification of the necessary methods of legal knowledge pre-sented in the natural-law and positivist types of le-gal thinking.
