Abstract

Objectives This study aims to develop ‘chair yoga’ and find out its applicability to middle-aged women's life.
 Methods For this purpose, the qualitative case study research method. In the qualitative study, this program was structured through implementation and evaluation so that ‘chair yoga’ could be well accepted. First, through expert consultation, the ‘chair yoga’ program was developed and implemented in the field, and the data exchanged with the class observation and participants were completed through expert evaluation again. From April to June 2022, 50-minute yoga classes were provided twice a week at the Y community center in Seoul for 8 weeks.
 Results A total of 14 middle-aged women aged 45-64 years participated. As a result, 8 movements chair-seated and chair-standing Asana were finally structured. The final 16 “Chair Asana” were adopted from the 24-movement “Chair Asana” developed as a result. Through the execution and evaluation of “chair yoga”, Asana's backstretch 2, heron position, tilt position, twist position, cobra position, warrior position 2, boat position, eagle position, backstretch position, triangular position, palm position, squat position, tree position, and appearance position were finally structured.
 Conclusions During the eight-week period of “Chair Yoga,” the program was highly compliant and well accepted by participants, and there were no injuries or side effects, so it could be recognized as a suitable program for middle-aged women as a lifestyle yoga.
