Abstract

The article identifies and compares the most frequent Russian and British folk tale symbols, which are considered as a key point of the whole set of symbolic and linguistic manifestations of culture. The notion “symbol” is differentiated from the adjacent notions “sign”, “allegory” and “artistic image”. The author suggests a classification of means to actualize symbols in fabulous universe, which includes artefacts, naturfacts and mentifacts. The paper clarifies the semantic structure of symbols in two folkloric traditions, discovers their ambivalent nature, ability to integrate Christian and pagan symbols.
