Abstract

The aim of the research is to identify the genre features of the poetics of the initiation novel in the national literary tradition of the USA. The paper highlights the genre-forming features of the initiation novel: invariant elements of composition, chronotope, motif-thematic complexes, character systems; determines the role of the genre in the formation of the national identity of American literature. The research makes a theoretical contribution to the study of the genre: the term “initiation novel” is introduced, an intra-genre classification is proposed, which accounts for the scientific originality. Three genre forms are distinguished within the initiation novel: the novel of release, the novel of overcoming and the novel of discovery. Works of the American literature of the early XXI century the plot-forming basis of which are the themes of growing up, gender, existential, cultural self-identification of teenagers, problems of overcoming crises, post-traumatic syndrome serve as the research material. As a result, it has been proved that the genre under study has unique features that can be traced at all levels of the literary text.
