Abstract

This research aims are understanding the meaning of life and social adjustment process for the physically handicapped by examining their participation in sitting volleyball. It brings light on how the physically disabled athletes’ participation in sitting volleyball affects their lives and processes of getting adjusted to the society. Therefore, case study, which was one of the intellectual tradition of the qualitative research, was conducted. D sitting volleyball team, which belongs to the local sports association of the disabled of A Metropolitan city, was selected as a research environment. 1 current leader and 7 current sitting volleyball players who are taking part in the training were also selected as the study participants. The data were collected through participatory observation and analyzed through text analysis. Research findings are as follows; First, participation in sitting volleyball of the physically handicapped performs preeminent role in recovering physical ability and staying healthy as a manner of physical rehabilitation. In addition, confidence in their daily lives improves a lot, which helps them to discover new meanings in lives. Also, they can be reminded of the ‘Family love(spirit)’ through the sport and establish the steppingstone to promote harmonious family life. Moreover, functioning as sound leisure sport, sitting volleyball offers high satisfaction to the physically handicapped who are not able to make good use of their spare time due to the disability. Second, the opportunity to communicate with non-disabled increases through participating in sitting volleyball. The participation in the sport and the communication help participants to do away with the aggressive and self-centered attitude and enable them to cultivate the consideration and respect. Also, participants are able to form wide social relationship networks and enlarge them. These changes even appear to have positive effects on their career. Consideration for others and tendency to manage their lives actively are impressive enough to move their coworkers and bring stable work place lives. Consequently, the physically handicapped people’s belief and passion for sitting volleyball encourage them to found self-sustained organization-called ‘association’-and establish social infrastructure for independence.
