Abstract

This study aims to build a new knowledge base for setting up a future-oriented discussion of the field of sports. To be more specific, this study has selected some important future issues that may have effects on the field of sports in the next 10 years, and then analyzed their possibilities and impacts on a future society. For this purpose, a literature study and a Delphi study have been conducted. First, a total of 28 future issues have been tentatively identified through the literature review. Next, 30 experts in the field of sports selected the final 10 issues based on their possibilities and impacts. These final 10 issues were divided into four groups. Group 1 consists of the most important issues, which have a high possibility and large impacts, such as scientific technology, low fertility/super-aging, lifestyle that emphasizes quality of life, increase in life expectancy, inequalities and hyper-connected society. Group 2 consists of issues such as social disaster and insecurity regarding the future of younger generations; these could have large impacts in spite of a lower possibility for them to happen. The issues of Groups 3 and 4, however, are less important than those above, for example inter-Korean relations, gender issues, global governance, low growth and so on. As a final result, ‘10 Future Issues in the Field of Sports’ are summarized as follows; low fertility/super-aging, lifestyle that emphasizes quality of life, increase in life expectancy, inequalities, insecurity about the future of younger generation, instability of employment, hyper-connected society, social disaster, climate change and scientific technology.
