Abstract

The article examines evolution of the French verbs from synthetism to analytism. The research objectives are as follows: to study the phenomenon of variability in verbal forms usage by the material of the French manuscripts of the IX-XIV centuries, to clarify causes of the French verbal system evolution relying on the diasystematic approach. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the French language evolution from synthetism to analytism is for the first time considered from the viewpoint of the diasystematic approach. The new diasystematic approach to studying historical evolution of the French verbal system makes it possible to identify causes of variant verb forms usage at different stages of the language development. Evolution of the French verb forms is analysed comprehensively: changes at the level of the language system - diachronic type of variability; changes at the text level - diaphase type of variability.
