Abstract

This paper aims to examine euphemisms used to evaluate the appearance and personality of characters in Korean and Chinese from a contrastive linguistic perspective. In this paper, in consideration of various factors such as culture, etiquette, religion, ethnicity, and psychology in daily communication process, any expression that prevents the other party from being offended or makes him/her/them pleasant and comfortable is defined as ‘euphemism (expression)’. On the base of the notion ‘euphemism’, this paper contrasts and analyzes the expression methods of Korean character evaluation euphemisms and Chinese character evaluation euphemisms, and describes the common and differential points of the two languages. People react sensitively to topics related to appearance or personality, and the evaluation tends to be negative, so the main analysis target of this paper is the expressions that talk around the point. In addition, the analysis target is to express even positive evaluations better. Appearance evaluation was divided into "face," "height," "body," and "aging," and personality evaluation was divided into "talkative" "impatient" "stubborn" "good at flattering" "stupid" and "slow". In succession, it was presented by dividing it into common expressions between Korean and Chinese, expressions that exist in Korean but do not exist in Chinese, expressions that exist in Chinese but do not exist in Korean, and expressions used differently in Korean and Chinese.
