Abstract

The article considers the phenomenon of faith in the context of the Russian literature and philosophy. It is shown that in the Russian philosophical culture, including religious philosophy, faith is traditionally understood not only as a phenomenon of religious consciousness, theological subject, but also as an existential problem, which reveals the contradictory, dramatic and tragic nature of human existence. The peculiarity of the Russian philosophy is that moral quest often has a deep existential meaning. This distinguishes it from the Aristotelian ethical discourse typical of the western philosophy. Literary works by F. M. Dostoevsky, L. N. Tolstoy, A. P. Chekhov, V. V. Rozanov and L. Shestov served as the research material.
