Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the meaning extension of Verb ‘拿’ in Modern Chinese. The prototype meaning of ‘拿’ is ‘to hold something by hand or other means’. Based on the prototype meaning, the meaning of the Verb ‘拿’ was extended within ‘space domain’, ‘social domain’ and ‘mental domain’. Several processes are examined among the interrelated meanings of Chinese verb ‘拿’: domain shift, the imposition of profile, active zone shift, active zone and profile’s discrepancy, etc.
