Abstract

The aim of the study is to reveal the semantics and word-formation possibilities of verbs with the meaning ‘to touch’ by the material of the Khanty and Mansi languages. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time the Khanty verb хойты and its Mansi equivalent хōйылтаӈкв are described; on the basis of the lexical units analysis, the Mansi verb хōйылтаӈкв reveals three new meanings that are not fixed in the existing dictionaries. The lexemes have both similarities in semantics and differences between them. The obtained results have shown that the semantics of the Khanty verb хойты significantly expands with the appearance of a structural component (a name in the dative-directional case) in the position of the predicate, as well as in combination with the preverbs иԓ and йӑха , which serve as sources of semantic shift.
