Abstract

Based on theoretical concepts, types, and components, the traditional Dancheong patterns were analyzed by shape, format, and color; thus, five pieces of fashion products were designed. The purpose of this study was to provide data on the development of fashion items that embraced Dancheong patterns. As a literature study, concepts, types, and characteristics of traditional Dancheong patterns were investigated, and as an empirical study, Dancheong patterns were analyzed. The shape of Dancheong patterns was classified into a straight form, a straight-curved combined form, and a free curve form. The format of Dancheong patterns was classified into repetition, symmetry, and asymmetry. Lastly, the color of Dancheong patterns was divided into complementary color contrast and value contrast. Six types of fabric were designed based on the most beautiful and versatile patterns, such as Meoricho (rafter-end) pattern and Gold gate. The three types of from and the color contrast combined to produce five outfits. This study contributes to understand the traditional Dancheong patterns, to develop a textile design applying the traditional Korean cultural heritage and the inherent beauty of Korea, and to apply in modern fashion.
