Abstract

Within the framework of the article research attention is focused on substitution as a frequency means of grammatical cohesion of a dramatic text. The paper emphasizes the problem of the types of substitution that are observed in dialogues of dramatic texts, their role in ensuring the cohesion of such texts. The drama “Pygmalion” by B. Shaw is chosen as the factual material of the study. The dialogues of the drama characters, according to the author’s observations, are characterized by semantic transparency and syntactic simplicity, and therefore the researcher (and the reader) has the opportunity to identify easily substitution models and their text-forming functions.
