Abstract

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a multifactorial chronic skin disease that onsets at an early age. The AD prophylaxis is extremely important because of the high risk of development of allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma later on. The authors present an overview of the mechanisms of the AD development. The significance of congenital factors predisposing to the AD substantiates the earliest possible initiation of preventive measures, especially in families with a positive history of atopy. The modern measures for AD prevention are based on the pathogenetic mechanisms of the disease. One of the effective preventive measures is the use of emollients.
