Abstract

Oxidative stress is the most important pathogenetic mechanism of acute pancreatitis (AP). In this study, components of the antioxidant system (AOS), such as ceruloplasmin (CP), albumin (ALB) and uric acid (UA), were studied in the plasma of healthy humans and patients with AP of varying severity. Regardless of the severity of AP, antioxidant protection is reduced. With a mild degree of AP the level of UA is significantly reduced, but compensatory increased level of CP. In medium and high degree of AP the decrease in antioxidant protection activity is associated with a decrease in ALB levels as the prevailing plasma antioxidant, as well as an increase in UA levels above the physiological level.
