Abstract

In this paper, we attempted to review the problem of classification of Korean converbal endings and suggest syntactic classification criteria. This paper covered the following: Previous problems in classifying converbal endings, variables and criteria for classifying converbal endings based on hierarchical syntactic structure, new directions that can be proposed, etc. The criteria of relational meaning, modification object, and conjunction that were mainly used so far had various problems. To compensate for this, we went back to the original syntactic structure and looked at the variables to be considered. Then, the syntactic classification criteria for converbal endings were summarized. This criteria was prepared by distinguishing the external structure from the internal structure, starting from complementizer, which is an converbal ending. And it was considered necessary to pay attention to the inflection that preceded the complementizer. And the possibility of applying these criteria was also explored.
