Abstract
The article is devoted to the Dionysian motifs in the Friedrich Hölderlin’s lyrical works. It considers the role of historical context in development of poet’s philosophical and aesthetic ideas and reveals the specificity of the ancient topos in Hölderlin’s works which reflects his religious and pantheistic views. The Dionysian motifs in Hölderlin’s poems are connected with the idea of death. All forms of life tend towards death and decline of existence under the influence of the sense of primordial unity and religious ecstasy. The end of earthly life, according to Hölderlin, marks the beginning of a true life in eternity.
