Abstract

In 1107, the Goryeo army led by commander Yun Gwan, conquered the Jurchens and incorporated their area into Goryeo territory. According to Inscriptions on the Wall of Yeongju office 英州廳壁記, the area was described as ‘the square 300 ri里.’ On the other hand, Dongin Ji Mun Sa Ryuk (Four-Six Proses of Eastern People), quoted from ‘Yun Gwan Biography’, said crossing the area needs seven days. However, this statement is not found in the ‘Yun Gwan Biography’ in Goryeo Sa 高麗史. Comparing the record of ‘crossing the area needs seven days’ with Yeoji Doseo 輿地圖書 compiled in Joseon Dynasty in the 18th century, it can be assumed that Goryeo army reached from Dancheon to Gilju area.<BR> As Yun Gwan’s army marched to the northeast, it is necessary to consider the distance within 424 ri, which is the diagonal line of the square 300 ri. Calculations show that the northeastern boundary of the Yun Gwan’s occupied territory was more than Dancheon and less than Gilju, which shows almost the same result from record of Dongin Ji Mun Sa Ryuk. Therefore, the range of Yun Gwan’s occupied territories became more accurate. According to the historical materials on the Jin dynasty, it is consistently said that “Goryeo built Nine Fortresses in Helan dian 曷懶甸”, so it can be seen that the range of Helan dian was larger than Yun Gwan’s occupied territories.
