Abstract

The research objectives are as follows: to trace origins of the “contemplation” concept in J. W. Goethe’s aesthetical views, to analyse representation of the mentioned concept in his creative work. The article examines specificity of the “contemplation” concept understanding in the ancient and modern European philosophy, reveals the role of contemplation conceptions in J. W. Goethe’s aesthetical views formation. Scientific originality of the study involves comparing J. W. Goethe’s and Plotinus’s views on the contemplation phenomenon. The research findings are as follows: the author proves that Goethe’s contemplation conception, formed under the influence of Neoplatonism and as a response to Kant, embodies his aesthetical, philosophical and scientific views and constitutes a basis of his scientific and artistic activity.
