Abstract

The article considers the features of teaching foreign languages to future officers in the Russian Empire from Peter’s epoch to October Revolution. The author notes the leading role of the German and French languages during that period. The reasons, as a rule, of brilliant knowledge of foreign languages by the officers of the Russian tsarist army in the XVIII-XIX centuries are analyzed. The process of teaching foreign languages is discussed in the work in parallel with the history of the existence of cadet educational institutions in the Russian Empire.
