Abstract

In the center of attention are the texts of historians of the second half of the XVIII century G. A. Poletika and V. G. Ruban, devoted to the history of national education. The problems, source base, ways of representing the topic in the context of the general state of historical science of that time are considered. The article substantiates the position that the scientific Ukrainian historiography begins with these works. A gap is shown in the ways of studying the national past between the traditional Cossack historical writing and problematic history. Criticizes and refines modern ideas about the formation of national historical science.
