Abstract

The article deals with the problem of receiving theological education by the clergy of the Western Church after the acquisition of freedom by the Church in the Roman Empire in the IV century. Despite the absence of theological educational institutions in the period under review, the West is known for the names of many holy fathers who made an invaluable contribution to the Orthodox expression of the foundations of the Christian faith as bearers of the grace of the Holy Spirit, but also as one of the most educated people of their time. How did the episcopate and the clergy manage to receive a theological education in the absence of theological schools almost until the 4th century? An attempt to answer this and other questions will be undertaken in the framework of the study below.
