Abstract

The article provides a comparative analysis of a fairy-tale allusion functioning in the speech of native speakers of Russian and American English. The study focuses on identifying nationally specific components of the cognitive structure of the allusion with the component Золушка/Cinderella and on describing the peculiarities of the linguistic worldview, which influence the coding and decoding of an image. The analysed frames and sub-frames constituting the structure of this allusion manifested cardinally different associative relations actualized during its usage and, consequently, different motivation for using the allusion based on this comparison.
