Abstract

The purpose of this study is to present the expression methods of upcycling in contemporary fashion design through literature review and case studies and to produce creative denim upcycle fashion designs. Data collection was achieved by collecting 272 brands from 2015 S/S to 2022 S/S with a final 722 photos organized for research. Based on literature and research on previous studies, a total of five denim upcycling expression methods were selected. The results are as follows: First, patchwork was the most common method of reconstruction, and appliques were handcrafted to show a richer artistic sense and volume, allowing decorations with individuality to appear like embroidery on upcycled denim materials. Second, a significant amount of bleaching and dyeing has appeared in recent collections. Denim materials have been newly designed in various colors with some designs even having brand logos bleached onto the denim. Third, unthreading and chenille effect are unique expression methods of denim upcycling where thread is unraveled along the unique organization of denim materials. Design development results using 3D digital clothing technology and based on the above expression methods are as follows. First, expression methods were used as denim upcycling expression methods and the design development presented possibilities for new eco-friendly fashion design methods that attempt diversity. Second, the use of used denim jackets, jeans, and stock fabrics collected for the development of upcycled fashion designs provides an opportunity to extend the design value and lifetime of denim products by expanding the design process of sustainable fashion products. Third, upcycling fashion design pieces in this study use eco-friendly fashion design methods developed through 3D digital clothing technology, and stages of clothing sample production in the fashion industry can be presented as a sustainable upcycling design method that can save time and increase work efficiency, and reduce fabric use.
