Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze two works of dystopian fiction, Nineteen Eighty-Four and Fahrenheit 451 from a political point of view. The study regards two societies described in the two novels as digital totalitarianism and argues that the two societies destroy archives as a maintenance method of state power. So, the study attempts to analyze the issues of individuals coping with the destroying of archives of the totalitarian regimes. First, the study compares the two major protagonists, Winston Smith and Guy Montag in their resistance to destroying archives. Second, it analyzes spokesmen of the system protection, O’brien and Captain Beatty. Third, it investigates two female characters, Julia and Mildred. Fourth, it analyzes accelerators and guides to the resistance against destroying books, Faber and Granger. Lastly, it concentrates on Winston and Montag’s resistance to the destruction of archives.
