Abstract

The article summarizes the results of archaeological research of A.P. Umansky at a new stage of his scientific activity. On the basis of unpublished archival sources for the first time in the historiography consideration is given to contacts of the Barnaul researcher with the leading Soviet archaeologists M.P. Gryaznov, A.P. Okladnikov, B.B. Piotrovsky. The publication provides an overview of the field excavation works of A.P. Umansky in Lower Suetka, Razdymie, Plotinnoe, Ilinka and other sites. Special emphasis is given to the research on Ulalinka, which gave rise to a lengthy debate and led to the birth of a radically new hypothesis about the time and ways of the initial development of Siberia. This article shows the process of the formation of theoretical views of Umansky on the several problems of Altai archaeology. So the scientist formulates the idea that Andronovo population emerged in the Upper Ob region at the final stage of development of the Fedorovo culture. In addition, it proves the thesis about the uniqueness of the sites of the steppe and forest-steppe zone of the Altai region in the second half of the 1st Millennium BC, which differ from the burials of the Bolsherechenskaya culture of the Upper Ob region and from Majjemirsko-Pazyryksko-Shibinskie mounds of the Altai Mountains. Later, in the early 1980s, together with V.A. Mogilnikov he will give detailed arguments to prove that a large group of monuments, he excavated are attributed to the special Kamenskaya culture.DOI 10.14258/izvasu(2017)5-35
